The Science of Better Performance
The foundation of EnviroKlean’s disruptive approach to produced water management is EK One™, our carbon-based chemistry platform harnessing the power of the carbon atom in a revolutionary new way.
- POWER OF CHELATION: EK One uses proprietary carbon array technology to leverage the power of chelation, chemically transforming Iron (Fe) and other elemental building blocks, preventing them from forming the organic chemical reactions that produce iron sulfides and other toxic waste by-products.
- SOLIDS CONTROL: EK One returns elements responsible for the creation of waste solids back “into solution”, where they remain atomically stable, sequestered, and permanently bound within the source water, preventing solids and harmful gases from forming.
- CORROSION PROTECTION: EK One aggressively attacks scale with strong acidic power, while simultaneously delivering a mono-molecular layer of carbon “protection” that protects Iron from corrosion in an entirely new way.
This 2-minute video demonstrates EnviroKlean’s EK One™ carbon-based chemistry platform permanently chelating iron (Fe) in produced water.
Through a controlled, multi-stage reaction, EK One transforms iron sulfide at the molecular level — stabilizing iron in solution, eliminating solids, and delivering clean, reusable water without precipitation, even under extreme temperatures.
This 1-minute video demonstrates (1) the power of EK One™ carbon-controlled acid aggressively dissolving scale, while (2) simultaneously demonstrating the unique layer of “carbon protection” that protects iron and improves safety for personnel.
In this side-by-side comparison with standard hydrochloric acid, EK One (i) removes carbonate scale more effectively, (ii) prevents Iron (Fe) corrosion, and (iii) eliminates the skin-burn hazards associated with traditional acids — delivering superior performance without the tradeoffs.
Most chemical programs are designed to solve a biological problem (bacteria) but create a physical problem (sludge) from oxidized Iron.
EK One™ solves both problems, neutralizing the biological threat with multiple mechanisms that avoid the creation of physical waste.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does EK One™ differ from conventional biocide programs?
The difference is that EK One™ prevents creation of waste solids.
Conventional biocide programs use commodity oxidizers (ClO2, PAA, H2O2, Permanganate, Ozone or Bleach) that operate via “flash oxidation”, which instantly precipitates iron into solid waste (sludge) that clogs wells & pipelines and that requires expensive haul-off & disposal.
EK One uses the power of chelation to take an innovative (and totally different) approach. It prevents the iron-based organic reactions that create waste solids, keeping contaminants in solution rather than dropping them out. Working in tandem with EnviroKlean’s patent-pending Zero Solids technology, our ZSR solids-free recycling solution eliminates sludge hauling and disposal fees, reduces facility maintenance, and improves overall asset uptime.
Can switching to EK One™ actually increase my oil revenue?
Yes. Iron precipitates and sulfide solids act as “emulsifiers”, creating thick rag layers (pads) at the interface that trap oil in the water phase. By destabilizing these rag layers, EK One™ prevents oil-wet solids pads from forming, allowing trapped oil to break free and float to the surface. For gun barrels and other oil separation tanks, EK One is most effective when used in combination with EK Recirculate™, EnviroKlean’s patent-pending system for eliminating solids pads and improving oil skim.
The oil revenue benefit is two-fold: (1) higher daily skim oil volume, and (2) lower BS&W (Basic Sediment & Water) deducts at the sales point.
How does EK One™ impact injection pressures and SWD capacity?
EK One™ prevents increases in pressure that reduce injection rates, providing maximum injection integrity. High SWD injection pressure is typically caused by pore-clogging solids and scale buildup that restricts the formation face. Conventional oxidizers often cause this damage by precipitating iron and allowing biofilm to develop in the pores near the wellbore radius.
EK One inhibits both Iron-related solids formation and scale nucleation, keeping formation pores open longer. This prevents pressure spikes, allowing SWDs to continue to inject maximum barrels per day while staying safely below seismic or regulatory pressure limits. This also protects casing and tubing and eliminates the need for acid jobs and well workovers.
Does EK One™ scavenge H2S without creating sulfur fallout?
Yes. Conventional Triazine scavenger treatments often suffer from “redox stall”, leaving dangerous elemental sulfur or sludge in the bottom of the pipe. EK One™ drives the reaction to completion, fully oxidizing sulfides into stable, soluble sulfates. This prevents gas hazard and corrosion problems while ensuring continuous uptime without the risk of solids blocking the flowline.
Is EK One™ compatible with Friction Reducers (FR) for completions?
Yes. One of the biggest risks with oxidative water treatment is “carryover” that breaks polymer chains and ruins frac viscosity. EK One™ is FR-Compatible, often increasing friction reduction by 5-10%. It protects Friction Reducers and does not degrade anionic or cationic polymers, ensuring your treated water performs predictably during the Completion phase.
Is EK One™ corrosive to pipeline steel?
No. While oxidizers and strong acids increase corrosion rates by spiking the water’s redox potential, EK One™ is engineered for optimal asset integrity. It forms a passive, mono-molecular layer of carbon protection on steel, actually reducing corrosion rates for pipelines and other infrastructure compared to untreated water.
How does "Chelation" actually work?
EK One™ utilizes proprietary carbon array technology that creates a multi-nodal bond with metal ions. Think of it as a molecular “cage” that wraps around ions like Ferrous Iron (Fe2+). Once sequestered, the iron is chemically “locked” and 100% water soluble. It does not react to form rust, scale or sludge, even under extreme changes in pH, temperature, or salinity.
How does EK One™ prevent pond souring during long-term storage?
Unlike “self-spending” commodity oxidizers that burn out immediately upon contact with water, EK One™ utilizes a Demand-Based Release system. The chemistry remains latent and preserves its oxidative power until it detects organic demand (bacteria). This sustained residual effect prevents bacterial regrowth and prevents water from souring for weeks and months, not just for hours.
How is EK One™ dosed?
Precision is key. EK One™ uses stoichiometric dosing (matching the chemical ratio to the iron load) rather than a static setpoint. EnviroKlean’s EK FlowPro™ injection management system adjusts injection rates in real-time based on changes in both organic demand and water flow rate, ensuring chemistry is not over-treated or under-treated.
